Cosmoplast® is a human-based, genetically engineered injectable collagen filler. As infants, our skin begins with a smooth and supple appearance which is provided primarily by collagen and hyaluronic acid - the collagen specifically provides structural support to the skin. With time, sunlight, genetics and other factors, collagen and hyaluronic acid in our skin diminishes and the skin loses structure and volume. This loss of structure and volume translates into unwelcomed lines and wrinkles. Collagen and hyaluronic acid fillers aim to restore these losses, smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, and restore a more youthful appearance.
With the advent of hyaluronic acid fillers, collagen products are often felt to be a product of the past, however Cosmoplast offers several unique features that allow it to have a special niche in the filler market. Although it may be used for wrinkle and fold correction, our physicians at M.D. Spa and Laser primarily use Cosmoplast for lip enhancement and/or radial lip lines. Wrinkle and fold correction are now dominated by longer duration, more powerful fillers such as Restylane, Juvéderm or Radiesse.
Despite advancements in the filler marker, Cosmoplast continues to have a niche in lip enhancement procedures mainly because of superior comfort, limited swelling, and safety. Cosmoplast is formulated with lidocaine, a common anesthetic, to dramatically minimize pain associated with the injection. Nerve blocks are not required like they are with other fillers. Moreover, for those people who want lip enhancement without any significant swelling or downtime, Cosmoplast is the answer. Clients can often return to daily activities without any notable side effects such as swelling. Correction is instantaneous without change after injection. Cosmoplast is also very safe. Because the collagen protein of Cosmoplast mimics that of the human body, pre-injection testing (e.g. bovine-based collagen) is not necessary, and reactions are rare. In fact, because of remarkable biocompatibility, Cosmoplast and hyaluronic acid fillers can be used in combination. The duration of action for Cosmoplast is approximately 3 months.
